Barack Obama:
Son of Promise, Child of Hope by Nikki Grimes
Grimes, N.
(2008). Barack Obama: Son of Promise,
Child of Hope. New York, NY: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Nonfiction
Biography; Multicultural Literature
In the beginning of this book, an African
American boy named David sees President Barack Obama on television and asked
his mother who he was. She tells him his name, then goes into the story of his
life, beginning with his stay in Hawaii, on to his move to India, and his
inauguration here in the United States of America as the 44th
president. At the end of the mother’s story about Obama’s life, David states
that he wants to become president when he grows up. Obama’s story influenced
this little boy to want to be successful. Even if he weren’t to become
president of the United States, he could still be successful in whatever he
chooses to pursue. Students can read this book for two reasons: either to learn
more about the 44th president, or to get a sense of inspiration to
follow their dream and become successful, both lessons would be ideal for this
book.
